What do you teach ?

What do you teach? An oft asked question. . Well , I teach so and so . But can we ever say , we just teach the subject ? Are we just telling the students the concepts of what we teach and the ways of getting A* in the subject ? Are we just concerned with the results and our renumeration ?

A teacher does not just teach. She /he does much more than that. She/he touches their lives in such a manner that even she /he does not know. Each teacher wants her student to do the best and in the process , they adopt different methods as suited at that time. They also touch a chord somewhere and then build a relationship with them which lasts for a lifetime.

The focus of teaching has moved from the teacher to the learner, But that has not changed the importance of teacher. A teacher is still the guide, one who ensures that the learner remains focussed on the task and not go astray.

The role played by the teacher changes with every phase of learning. To a kindergartener , the teacher is the next mother .To a teenager , a teacher is a mentor and to the high schooler a teacher is a friend and a guide with whom they can discuss their career choices and fears.

Whatever be the phase, for a teacher , the student is important. For him or her, the student is her. They are as possessive about them as they are about their own child and they will work hard to ensure that the child works to their potential.

In todays world , people feel online teaching tools will become redundant but even those are developed by teachers. Just like you cannot take away the role of parents in a person's life, you cannot take away the importance of a teacher in a student's life. Every child will remember a teacher who has changed his /her life , who has brought a new perspective in his/her life.

Yes , teaching may be a low paying profession. But the greatest pay for a teacher is when he/she is old, a young successful man/woman comes to them and says "Sir/Madam, do you remember me. I can never forget the way you encouraged me" That words are worth a million dollars because you have changed someone's life for the better.

A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.
