Last Friday , I was walking along the Grand Souq in Bur Dubai with my family , happily window shopping after a long time. My cousin had come and we had gone out together to spend the day.
Suddenly a young man very hesitatingly came up to me and asked me " Were you teaching in Dominics" ? It was an ex student whom I had taught 17 years earlier in Kerala and he had recognised me even though I had changed a lot in appearance since then . I have taught him only for a year . Yet ,he came up to me and wished me . He had that respect in his eyes for a teacher.
And it was like a silver lining in the dark ness. The behaviour of students , the demands of inspection and often unrealistic expectations of parents in current educational scenario had made me a little sceptical about the the profession . The pressure along with the personal issues had taken a toll on my confidence and professionalism .
However , these moments when an old student comes up to you, recognises you talks a lot about how noble and rewarding this profession is. It may not be paid well but there is still amount of respect left in this profession at least among the students whom I taught in India .
It may be just a fleeting moment but it was enough for me to get back to the old passionate teacher that I am always. It is just that it had got covered with dust and ashes in the wake of storms that had struck me. But I rise like a Phoenix bird ,rehcarged , rejuvenated ready to make a difference in the life of someone.
Yes I am a teacher and I love each and every moment of teaching with its share of happiness and sorrows.
